Life seems pretty good for the Worst Girl in America. From her acclaimed album to breakout sets at some of the world’s biggest music festivals – remember that video from Coachella? – Slayyyter is having the kind of year other artists dream about. After a recent appearance at Lollapalooza, the pop star caught up with M·A·Czine to tell us how she’s taking it all in.
FROM ST. LOUIS WITH LOVE
“The Midwest is kinda the thesis of my album in a way,” Slayyyter tells M·A·Czine. “Growing up in a mundane kind of suburban place, there’s something very special about it. It’s definitely shaped the way that I dress, the way that I talk, everything. I love St. Louis.”
This love for her heritage and Americana is evident everywhere in her work, from her signature trucker hat to her reference to various icons in pop culture. Her favorite lyric she’s ever written? “Has to be ‘Richard, we should Link Later,’” she says with a smile. (Fun fact: her stage name is a spin on a character from one of the revered director’s cult classics. She added with three Y’s “because no-Y was taken, one-Y was taken, two doesn’t feel right, and three is like, perfectly rounded,” plus “I wanted the username.”)
“THE MIDWEST IS KINDA THE
THESIS OF MY ALBUM.”

SUMMER OF SLAYYYTER
A lifetime student of pop, Slayyyter was destined for stardom on her own terms. After self-releasing her first EP in 2019, she quickly amassed a loyal, highly engaged online following. Two full-length albums and a string of viral singles later, she returned with her most ambitious and raw work yet. It became one of the year's biggest and critically-adored pop hits – even if she can’t believe it.
“The most surreal change in my life since Worst Girl in America came out is probably just the reception and everyone loving the album so much – it’s crazy,” she says. “All of these things keep happening and I’m shocked, you know? I’m like, so honored and grateful people are connecting with it so much. It’s really beautiful.”
AND IT’S FUN.”

MAKEUP YOU CAN SLEEP IN
When you’re touring the world, you’ve got to be ready for anything. That’s why Slayyyter thinks overdressing is a myth. “When my schedule’s really busy, sometimes you have to show up with a full beat somewhere like the doctor’s office,” she says. “That’s kinda crazy, to show up fully glammed, but honestly, I don’t believe in like, being overdressed or like, overly glammed. Look good wherever you go, you know?”
After all, “The most Slayyyter way to wear eyeliner is probably to sleep in it and wear it the next day.”
